FAJANS Maksymilian (1825-1890) - Polish images. Apolinary Kątski, Alexander Groza, Józef Komorowski. [Frontispis].
Toned lithograph on ark. 36.4x28.3 cm. Frontispises to one of the books of the monumental "Wizerunki polskie" by M. Fajans from 1851. The album consisted of 14 frontispises (which are covers of consecutive books), 46 portraits and as many biographies. The frontisprints and portraits were drawn by M. Fajans, most of them were printed in Paris at Lemercier's, the others came out from Fajans' presses in Warsaw. The frontispieces, carefully composed, with numerous symbolic figures and eloquent allegorical scenes, were printed in toned lithography; each bears clear references to the work of the persons portrayed in the particular notebook.
Imprint in the lower margin: "Lithogr. M. Fajans in Warsaw". Taped tears to two edges, staining of upper corner, upper margin slightly clipped.
