ERTÉ (Romain de TIRTOFF) [1892-1990] French artist of Russian origin. His nickname was taken from the French sound of his initials. Erté was a versatile artist, called the father of art deco. He was active in many fields such as painting, printmaking and designing costumes, jewelry and theatrical sets. The artist collaborated with the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar. In the wave of the revival of the art deco style in the 1960s, Erté took to creating limited-edition screen prints, in which one can find influences from his earlier set and costume designs. Two years before his death, Erté also designed limited edition Courvoisier cognac bottles and packaging.
