"Christ Behind the Wall" is a sketch for an oil painting with the same title, which the artist created in 1979 as part of a series of passion works entitled "The Cross." The 20 works on canvas depicted the passion of Jesus Christ in the current reality - urban space, on a block of apartments, in apartments, in parks, on construction sites. The anguished body of Christ is lonely, placed on the margins of life; the Crucified One is accompanied by a "contemporary Mary Magdalene," reliving his and her own tragedy among empty alcohol bottles, immersed in despair and remorse.
"The Cross" is one of the artist's most moving series of paintings - for the viewer of religious art, the Passion of the Crucified has succumbed to iconographic obscurity; meanwhile, thanks to the location of Christ's passion in contemporary space (including Warsaw), the viewer experiences an emotional shock, realizing anew the reality of these scenes.
