Initially associated with pop art, he later turned to figurative art based on photography; paints using pure, bright colors, often in acrylic technique; Hockney's paintings often contain explicit homosexual overtones (A Bigge Splash 1967, Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy 1970-71); Hockney also creates book illustrations (tales of the Brothers Grimm 1967) and set designs (including 1978 The Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart at the Metropolitan Opera in New York).
