[UTAMARO Kitagawa, copy] Hand-painted postcard stylized as a Japanese woodcut from the turn of the 20th century.
Ink, watercolor, paper. Work painted on a postcard issued in Russia ("Union Postale Universelle Russie"), 14 x 8.6 cm. Signed in p. d.: "Tshoki | K. Swidzinski" and inscribed in l.d.: "7/5 906. | "Lots of sweets and crumble - strong head!".
Copy (differing slightly in detail and coloring) of a woodcut by a widely unknown artist sub. "KSwidzinski." The copied woodcut was titled "Second Scene of a Boat Party" and its author was Eishōsai Chōki (1725-1795), a prominent Japanese woodcut artist.Chōki was a designer of Japanese woodcuts in the ukiyo-e style. Along with Utamaro, he was a pupil of Toriyama Sekien (1712-1788). Chōki is best known for his works depicting beautiful, slender women (bijin-ga), often depicted in a moody entourage.
The work was probably created in the wave of increased interest in Japanese art and Japanese woodcuts, which was initiated in Poland during the Young Poland period by, among others, Feliks Manggha-Jasieński (1861-1929), a prominent collector and donor to the National Museum in Cracow.
