The first novel - "Baba Macbeth of Gladkovycha" - tells of a drama taking place in a Polesie family in 1918, which we learn about from a 1940 conversation between Agafia and Adam in their own village yard. A dog belonging to the old couple has been poisoned, and they are arguing about where to bury it.
