Alfred Leopold Isidor Kubin (1877-1959) Austrian illustrator, printmaker, lithographer, painter, as well as writer, called the "Austrian Goya." He initially took up photography with Alois Beer. In 1898 he studied painting privately under Ludwig Schmid-Reutte. Since 1911 he was associated with the Munich group Der Blaue Reiter. He created his own individual style oscillating between symbolism and expressionism. He is considered one of the precursors of Surrealism.
