From 1827 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He graduated in 1833 with the title of "free artist ("niekłassnyj chudozhnik"), received a government scholarship at the same time and traveled to Dresden and Rome. He was commissioned by Czar Nicholas II to create a portrait of Pope Gregory XVI. The Pope awarded the artist the Order of the Golden Spur. He became a member of the Accademia Virtuosi al. Pantheon. In 1845 he was awarded the title of Academician for his painting "Portrait of Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich." In 1846 he took the chair of drawing and figure painting at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1858-1864 he was its director. In 1860 he joined the first board of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. A noted portraitist, he was associated with the Tsarist court and was regarded as a painter of the upper classes.
