Biography
One of the greatest poster artists in the history of this art discipline. Outstanding graphic artist, illustrator and educator, co-founder of the Polish poster school. In 1934 he graduated from the School of Graphic Industry as a lithographic illustrator. In 1934-39 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, graduating in the studio of Prof. M. Kotarbiński. He took up poster art in 1936, the same year he began working with the satirical weekly "Szpilki." He spent the years of occupation in Warsaw. In 1944 he printed drawings in the Lublin satirical weekly "Stańczyk". From 1945 to 1950 he lived in Lodz. He resumed cooperation with "Szpilki". In 1950 he returns to Warsaw. He designs scenery for the capital's "Syrena" Theater. Two years later, he becomes a professor at his alma mater, where he led the poster studio until 1985. He educated dozens of today's well-known graphic artists, poster designers. Young artists from all over the world came to his studio for internships. He won numerous art awards and prizes around the world. In 1948, at the International Film Poster Exhibition in Vienna, he received five first prizes. He published graphic commentaries, satirical drawings in the "Cultural Review", "Literature", graphically developed many books and exhibitions. He published a collection of drawings Book of Complaints (1961). He is a member of many international art associations, including the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI); in 1976 he received the title of Honorary Royal Desinger from the Royal Society of Arts in London. His works are distinguished by their simplicity, precision of thought, incredible sense of humor, and casual, laconic drawing.
