Studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw from 1946 to 1951. Co-founder of the Search for Form and Color group (1959) and the Wroclaw Group (1962). In the 1970s he was involved in conceptual art, running the Creative Information Gallery (1972-1975). He organized outdoor symposiums and art actions, such as Kontrapunkt (1972-1974). He participated in the First Biennial of Spatial Forms in Elblag (1965) and the Symposium of Artists and Scientists in Puławy (1966), creating objects representing kinetic art, in which color was an important element. In the second half of the 1960s, the issues of Chwalczyk's work were dominated by light and color, and he began to experiment with colorful shadow. From that time, when "Reproducers", "Reproductions" or "Spatial Forms" were created, to the objects from the series "This fantastic shadow" (2008-2010) and the latest realizations, the artist's search is based on theoretical knowledge of optics and physics, as well as color theory.
Jan Chwalczyk stressed that his work has nothing to do with painting, it is the shadow/semi shadow that creates the color range, while he himself is a "mere constructor of thought regarding light." "Light cleared of extraneous contexts becomes my text for the philosophical speculation called art". - confessed the artist.
