Lot description Show orginal version

ŁOZIŃSKA Halina - photo of lungs. Zakopane [1927].

Format:23.5X29cm.

Seemingly an ordinary X-ray photo, which, however, upon closer examination, reveals in itself a certain unique coincidence of people and places associated with it - having their prominent place in Polish history. The auctioned photo can be described in two ways:

x one doctor commissioned another doctor to take a chest X-ray of a certain Halina Lozinskaya -.

x the other took it in his office in Zakopane in 1927.

However, we are interested in the latter, a detailed description of the history associated with the object, which we can learn thanks to the fact that the object has been preserved in sensational condition despite the passage of almost a century. It doesn't take much effort to read the details of the two doctors, and the place of execution (the address of the X-ray room).

The person ordering this was none other than OLGIERD SOKOŁOWSKI (1885-1944) himself, a prominent phtysiatrist, residing in Zakopane at the time. His patients included Zofia Nałkowska, Karol Szymanowski, Stanisław Przybyszewski and Michał Choromański. He became famous in his work for, among other things, using artificial pneumothorax and burning out pleural adhesions. During the Nazi occupation, he was involved in underground activity (Branch "Bakcyl" of the 3rd "Waligóra" Wola District, Warsaw District of the Home Army) Ordinary Officer at the Wolski Hospital, 26 Plocka Street - executed along with other staff members and patients on the fifth day of the Warsaw Uprising at the corner of Zagloby and Gorczewska streets.

The second person associated with the auction object (its creator) is also an extremely interesting and distinguished figure - X-ray doctor - Major of the Polish Armed Forces, "Murmansk" - Dr. HUGO KARWOWSKI (1894-1941). A doctor who, in addition to his merits in the medical field (like the above-mentioned Dr. Sokolowski), was actively involved during World War II in the fight against the occupying forces. According to historical records and witness accounts, he was head of the ZWZ/AK outpost in Zakopane. In his X-ray laboratory, meetings of the local underground were held, important decisions were made about the course of the fighting, etc. For his activities, like Dr. Sokolowski, he was also bestially murdered by the Germans in 1941. An additional curiosity related to his character was the fact that in 1931 he was portrayed by Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz (portrait of Dr. Hugo Karwowski) and his daughter Lala Karwowska was painted twice by Witkacy in 1928 (portrait of the girl Lala Karwowska, August 19, 1928)

Taking into account the fact of the place where Dr. Karwowski kept his studio (vide the stamp on the photo), i.e. in the legendary Villa "Marilor" located at 18 Kościuszki Street in Zakopane, right next to the studio of Wojciech Kossak. One can safely pose the thesis that the two gentlemen, undeniably belonging to the Zakopane elite of the time, did not accidentally stand on their life path. The Villa Marilor housed perhaps the most important meeting place in Zakopane for the elite of the time - both local and visiting.
