The portrayed person is captured in 3/4 figure, sitting on a padded armchair. Photo pasted on original cardboard backing. In the lower margin under the photo, the imprint: "Photo by Jan Mieczkowski No. 496 in Warsaw." On the back an advertising vignette printed: "Jan Mieczkowski's Photographic Establishment in Warsaw at the corner of Ulica Miodowa and Senatorska in the house of W. Piotrowski No 496" and an identifying inscription in ink: "Wladyslaw Szczawinski B. Controller of the Lottery Office, to his successor in office as a memento". Good condition.
J. Mieczkowski (1830-1889) - Warsaw photographer. One of the greatest and best photographers of the 19th century, competing with Karol Beyer, itinerant daguerreotypist, outstanding portraitist (for his portraits he received an honorable mention at the General Exhibition in London in 1862). Awarded at numerous photographic salons in Europe and Asia. He opened his first establishment in 1847, and from 1861 the company was located at the corner of Senatorska and Miodowa Streets. In 1887 he took a photograph of Titus Chałubiński and Helena Modrzejewska.
