Katowice changed its name toSTALINOGRÓD two days after Joseph Stalin's death: "To honor the memory of the Great Leader and Teacher of the working masses and his eternal merits for Poland, the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of the Polish People's Republic resolve as follows: to rename the city of Katowice as the city of Stalinogród and the Katowice province as the Stalinogród province"- was passed in a decree of the State Council of March 7, 1953. On December 10, 1956, the name of the city of Katowice and the Katowice province was restored.
