Druskininkai was one of the most popular resorts and spas in the interwar period, valued especially by the so-called "cream of society" and the political elite of the time. Patients were attracted by the unusually picturesque views of the village, located directly on the Neman River, and good infrastructure. Jozef Pilsudski first spent a vacation in Druskininkai in June 1924. This was also the time of finishing his book "The Year 1920." During one of the Marshal's stays in Druskininkai, a young Eugenia Levicka became his personal doctor, with whom there are numerous rumors regarding the emotional lust that was to connect Pilsudski with the young doctor.
In 1928 the Druskininkai City Council granted Marshal Jozef Pilsudski the title of honorary citizen of the city.
