Portrait of the portrayed person captured in 3/4 figure, wearing Polish costume. In the lower right corner under the photo print: "T. Szajnok." On the lower margin of the photo pencil inscription: "Pankowski". Photo pasted on original cardboard backing. On the back an advertising vignette of the establishment printed: "Teodor Szajnok Photographed in Lviv on Pojezuickiye Street under L. 174 2/4 opposite the English Hotel" and an inscription in ink: "Władysław". Local minor stains, otherwise good condition.
W. Pankowski (1841-1866) - "born r. 1841 in the New World, student of the Polytechnic in Pulawy, served in Zdanowicz's detachment. Taken prisoner of war near Kazimierz with a gun in his hand, tried for 12 years of service with the Soldatens, was sentenced in Kazan to 16 years in the Nerchinsky mines for failing to swear allegiance to the Tsar. Having got to Lake Baikal, he took part in the Zabaikal uprising as one of the commanders. Captured by the Muscovites and sentenced to be shot, he later received an amended sentence of life imprisonment to the mines. As a result of his family's efforts, he was advertised by the Prussian government and thus returned to Poland, where he founded the Society for Mutual Care of Siberians in Lviv and was for some time its president. T. Szajnok (1833-1894) was a popular photographer in Lviv. Before 1862 he ran an establishment after Chołoniewski at 174 2/4 Pojezuicka St., from 1867 in his own newly built house at 727 2/4 Meyer St. In 1863 he photographed participants in the uprising. He was the author of the manual "Photographic Guide for the Use of Professional Photographers and Enthusiasts" published in 1893 in Berlin. Between 1868 and 1869 he published two albums of photographs (Album krasiczyńskie and Album żółkiewskie) for the first time in Poland hand-printed in the form of light-prints.
