The work is accompanied by an opinion issued by the ZW Foundation in Torun dated 4 II 2021.

The slogan of consumption appeared in the work of Natalia LL in 1972-1975, in the titles of a series of works. "Consumption Art" and, in 1975, also "Post-consumption Art," is a collection of black-and-white and color photographs and films showing the faces of women ostentatiously eating various products: bananas, sausages or kisel. [...]

The strategy [of the "Permafo" group, active since 1970, consisting of: Andrzej Lachowicz, Natalia LL, Zbigniew Dlubak, Antoni Dzieduszycki] was to refer to subjects related to common situations, which were documented as directly as possible. This concept was associated by critics with pop art, especially the poetics of Andy Warhol's films. In the case of Natalia LL, the association was justified insofar as artists associated with pop art referred to the visual patterns of mass culture and took up the themes of capitalist prosperity and the propaganda of universal consumption.

However, the sense of taking up such issues in Poland at that time, where there was a socialist economy of scarcity, seemed doubtful. For this reason, Natalia LL's works were denied critical value. From today's perspective, however, the 1970s in communist Poland appear as a period of strong awakening of consumer needs, as well as the creation of visual incentives to satisfy them. Admittedly, the opportunities for consumption were severely limited, but paradoxically this fact only intensifies the political significance of the artist's work. Consumption, which in the Gierek decade was a tool of state policy, and rationed goods appeared on store shelves at the right moments from the perspective of the authorities, existed in the sphere of expectations and perceptions of society, and controlling it was one of the ways of exercising power. [...]

In order to bring out the critical dimension of Natalia LL's work, scholars have drawn attention to the erotic nature of her photographs. Piotr Piotrowski wrote about the ostentatious link between eroticism and consumption, or even "consumer eroticism "of these works. In his opinion, the reification of eroticism, which is an inherent feature of mass visual culture, was exposed in them. In addition, he considered the work critical of the carefully masked anti-women policy of the authorities during the communist era, which was, by the way, one manifestation of a larger problem - the negative attitude toward women deeply rooted in Polish culture, its myths and stereotypes. On the other hand, Agata Jakubowska, in her interpretation of Natalia LL's work, adopted the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalysis, which allowed her to note that the female model in the photographs always assumes an active role, while the male element, the phallus, is reduced in them to a symbolic object of consumption. The active role of the woman is accompanied by the instrumentalization of the man, so there is a reversal of traditional social and cultural roles.
