A view of the shafts. On the back stamp: "Henryk Poddębski Warsaw, 7 Zajęcza St., tel. 526-39 Collection of sightseeing photographs" and pencil entry: "Boryslaw Oil Shafts", as well as a strip of paper with a typed identification test. Very good condition.
Boryslaw district - located at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains in the eastern borderlands. Known already at the turn of the 20th century for the extraction of natural wax, oil, natural gas. Between 1886 and 1939, the volume of oil and natural gas production ranked third in world production and completely covered Poland's demand for these raw materials, and even so, part was sent for export. In turn, the city of Boryslaw was in the interwar period the largest center of oil mining and the third in Poland in terms of area occupied after Warsaw and Lodz.
H. Poddębski (1890-1945) - prominent Warsaw photographer. From 1911 he was associated with the Polish Landscape Society, where he headed the photographic studio for many years. In 1934 his archive numbered more than 6,000 glass plates. In the 1930s he photographed with a small-image "Leica" camera. Since 1925 he ran a well-known photographic atelier at 25 Marszalkowska Street in Warsaw. His works were highly appreciated at exhibitions at home and abroad - he received many awards and prizes.
