Depicts the eastern frontage of Dietl Square overlooking the Josephine and Stefan spas. Photo pasted on original cardboard backing with red gating. On the lower margin of the backing print: "A. Szubert in Krakow and Szczawnica". On the back an advertising vignette printed: "A.Szubert in Krakow ul. Krupnicza 7 / Szczawnica in Cursalon" and a pencil inscription: "Spa of Josephine and Stefan". Perfect state of preservation.
A. Szubert (1837-1919) - painter, photographer, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (student of W. Łuszczkiewicz and W. Stattler), in Rome and Vienna. One of the first Tatra photographers. He photographed mainly the Tatra Mountains and Pieniny. He opened establishments in Oświęcim (1864), in Cursalon in Szczawnica (1865-1866) and in Cracow (1867-1882 at 17 Krupnicza Street) and again in Szczawnica (1882-1909). In 1876, the photographic establishment at 17 Krupnicza Street was awarded a medal of progress at a photographic exhibition in Brussels. Between 1893 and 1913 the establishment was run by his son Awit, and between 1913 and 1914 by his wife Amalia. From the 1870s he also photographed works of art, mainly paintings.
