Portrayed in full figure against painted decoration, sitting on carved chair. The young woman is dressed in a black long gown with a white collar; the gown is made of a sheenless fabric with long sleeves worn as a sign of the women's national mourning announced on March 3, 1861 after the funeral of the first five victims shot in Warsaw by the tsarist army during a patriotic demonstration. Photo pasted on original cardboard backing. On the lower left margin of the backing print: "A. Czajkowski". On the back an advertising vignette of the establishment printed: "Photographie A. Czajkowski Rue de la Passière, 1 Nevers." Above the vignette a shield of arms, on which the White Eagle and the Pogo of Lithuania, surmounted by a ribbon with the inscription: "Aux Armes Polonaises". Local stains, good condition overall.
A. Czajkowski - Polish photographer active in Nevers, France. He was born on September 30, 1822 in Cracow. He emigrated to France, first to Dijon, where he began working as a photographer. He then moved to Nevers, where he ran an atelier for fifteen years. Later he moved to Saint-Etienne and Bourges. His last years were spent in Tours.
