A collection of sparsely preserved photographs from the legacy of Benedict Henryk Tyszkiewicz. Photographs dated to the last decade of the 19th century. Currently, it is one of the four existing collections of photographs by this artist in the world, numbering several dozen pieces each. The largest collection, 93 photographs, adorns the Museum of Photography in Šiauliai, Lithuania. The second largest is found in 1993, a set of 86 photographs stored at the Musée Nicéphore Niepce in Chalon-sur-Saône, France. The third large collection is protected in the collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The artist's entire 40-year body of work was estimated to be about 20,000 photographs and negatives before the burning of his studio in Paris during World War I and the photographic studio at his palace in Lithuania. Unfortunately, both studios burned down which caused Tyszkiewicz to abandon his artistic passion. The group on display is the only known significant collection of his photographs in private hands. It deserves special attention primarily because of its unique content. The photographs mainly depict self-portraits of the author and his closest circle of family and friends. Evidence of the artist's emotional connection to these photographs is provided by one of the photographs depicting a salon in Tyszkiewicz's French villa with exposed photographs of his loved ones, all of which are included in the offered collection. Attention is drawn to the extremely successful self-portraits and wonderful shots of his beloved daughter Elisabeth. It should be recognized that due to the knowledge of their personalities as well as their emotional attitude to his loved ones, they are the quintessence of the artist's artistry and talent. This collection differs significantly from the other three surviving collections where architectural shots or those of an ethnographic nature dominate. All of the surviving works from Tyszkiewicz's private archive date from the last decade of the 19th century. They are pasted on identical cardboard sheets and have the characteristic numbering from the artist's archive, which is not fully deciphered.

Benedykt Henryk Tyszkiewicz coat of arms Leliwa (1852 Niemież - 1935 Mentona) - Polish count, photographer and collector. He made his debut as a photographer in 1876 at an exhibition in Philadelphia. He presented his work at exhibitions throughout Europe and America where he was awarded many times. A particularly valuable distinction was winning a gold medal at an exhibition in Berlin in 1899.He was an active member of the photographic community. From 1884 he belonged to the French Société Française de Photographie and from 1898 he was a member of the prestigious Paris-Photo-Club de Paris. His works were published alongside those of the greatest artists of French photography. Due to his vast wealth, Benedict Tyszkiewicz practically never got rid of his works. Therefore, after losing both studios and thus his artistic output and abandoning photography, he was practically forgotten. He was rediscovered and appreciated in the 1990s. His surviving works were presented at special exhibitions in France and Lithuania.
