Grandmother Spider is the title of an essay by Rebecca Solnit, from the collection Men Explain the World to Me, concerning women's non-existence in history, genealogy or human rights. According to Solnit,coherence- of patriarchy, lineage, stories - isachieved through erasure and exclusion. In many cultures, the moment of nuptiality often marks a dramatic turn in women's biography and leads to the suspension of a woman's legal existence.
