oil on fiberboard, dimensions 75 x 60 cm, signed on the back in pencil "Andrzej Mierzejewski"
Work attributed to Jacek Mierzejewski.
Jacek Mierzejewski (1915-1982) came from an artistic family (his father Jan and brother Jerzy were painters) and studied in the atelier of Mieczyslaw Kotarbinski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1935- 1939, and graduated in 1947. A "separate" artist, he exhibited little and was not associated with any artistic grouping. He combined a solid painting technique with an expressionistic way of depicting, sometimes deforming the representation, and existential themes were the most common in his work.
The quick, almost monochromatic and almost sketchily painted portrait of a woman in green shows a good mastery of form and familiarity with the painting tradition of the Netherlands with a surprising color palette, with nothing to detract from the reality of the representation.
