Artwork description:
Wojciech Kossak's paintings are widely known for scenes depicting episodes from the Napoleonic wars and recognizable at first glance depictions with images of lancers. In the work on display, the artist took up the theme of a winter crossing. In the foreground, the painter showed a lancer in an intense blue jacket with a bay horse wandering by the soldier's side. The man is serious, immersed in his thoughts and strides confidently ahead. The prevailing chill is evidenced by the lancer's gesture of hiding his frozen hands in the sleeves of his clothing, forming them into something like a muff. The impressively treated winter landscape in the background conveys the impression of a cold winter snowstorm, noteworthy are the blue-purple nuances in the sky part. This landscape additionally gives the whole composition a somewhat decorative character.
A similar type of depiction of a lancer with a horse has been taken up many times by Wojciech Kossak and is still very popular among collectors. The artist, in his characteristic way, with an expressive brushstroke, painted a scene that was actually generic, but which fit in with the military theme.
