DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
A recurring motif in Wlastimil Hofman's paintings has often been a reverie on transience. In the presented work, the artist used his characteristic composition, in which he showed a woman sitting on a rock in the foreground, while in the background he depicted a vast landscape with symbolic staffage. In the work "Paradise Lost" one can discern a vanitative pronunciation, indicated by a figure with a scythe, which is probably a personification of Thanatos. The melancholic mood is heightened by the author's title itself, but also by the figure of a thoughtful woman, as if unaware of the scene unfolding behind her back.
