Wladyslaw SKOCZYLAS

Studied in Vienna, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (under T. Axentowicz and L. Wyczółkowski), in Paris (sculpture under E. Bourdelle) and in Leipzig, at the Academy of Graphic Arts (1912-1913). Recognized as the founder of modern Polish woodcut, he also did watercolor. He exhibited together with the Formists. Co-founder of the Rhythm Artists Association. From 1922 to 1934 he held the chair of artistic printmaking at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, and from 1932 was a professor at the academy. In his work, he readily drew on folk folklore, especially often the Podhale region. After 1914, he abandoned metal techniques, devoting himself to woodcuts. He created about 200 woodcuts and about 100 engravings using other techniques.
