Work description:
The female portrait was the main subject in the paintings of Teodor Axentowicz. The artist portrayed his models in various shots and settings, expressing his fascination with female beauty. The painter developed an individual canon of female beauty, which was characterized by the presence of delicate facial features, a small nose, full lips and clearly marked eyebrow arches.
In the presented painting, the foreground shows a young woman sitting in an armchair, carrying on a telephone conversation or waiting to make a call. The figure is facing left and leaning on a massive armrest. Her gentle gaze is directed straight ahead, her eyes making contact with the viewer of the work. A gentle smile is drawn on the woman's face. The model's hair is softly wavy and pinned up. She is dressed in a richly ruffled white chiffon gown. A table with an empire gold vase is visible in the background.
The flowing, fine lines, pastel color palette and dimmed light contribute to the moodiness of the whole picture and allow the viewer to be transported back in time to the fin de siècle era.
