He was the brother of painter Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska and husband of Gabriela Zapolska (1901-1910). From 1882 to 1886 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow with J. Jablonski, F. Szynalewski and W. Luszczkiewicz. From 1887 to 1890 he continued his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under J.C. Herterich and A. Liezen-Mayer. He traveled to Italy and on plein air trips to Transylvania. from 1905 he lived in Lviv, where he became a professor at the Free Academy of Art in 1912. He designed scenery and theatrical costumes for it. His first exhibition was held in 1886 at TPSP in Cracow. He created mainly, genre scenes and atmospheric landscapes of Italian travels. During his service in the Legions, he made many drawings and watercolors on military subjects. He worked as an illustrator for magazines and books.
