Studied from 1880 to 1889 at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He received the status of an artist in 1888. He studied in the studio of Boris Willewalde and Carl Wenig at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in 1889 and became a member of the first group of Russian realists, the so-called Pieredvizhniki. He was a co-founder of the Society of Russian Artists in 1903. From 1898 to 1913 he taught at the Stroganov Academy in Moscow . He became an academician in 1912 and a full member of the academy in 1916. During the war he was the author of several posters for the Russian Red Cross . In the 1920s he managed to emigrate to Latvia , where he began teaching, and died in Riga in 1938. He exhibited in Düsseldorf (1904), Paris (1906), Berlin (1907), Munich (1909 and 1913), Prague (1914), New York (1924) and Riga (1925, 1935, 1936, 1937).
