Romuald Smorczewski ( Omsk 1901 - Warsaw 1962) , Mixed technique on canvas, 14.3cm x 10.8cm. The painting was painted during the artist's stay in Siberia. The painter was born in Siberia to a Polish intelligentsia family deported in the January Uprising. In 1920-1922 he studied at the Institute of Practical Art in Novo-Omsk. Despite the first years spent away from his native land, he eventually returned to his native land - to Warsaw where he lived and worked for the next few years. Before the war he graduated from the Municipal School of Decorative Arts and Painting, and from 1945 he was a member of the Warsaw branch of the Association of Polish Artists. His works were exhibited at Zachęta, the National Museum and the Museum of the Polish Army. The main theme of Smorczewski's work was man facing work as well as the hardships and moods of life.
