Rafal Malczewski's landscape-like compositions depicted, among other things, the Tatra Mountains, vast landscapes and small towns. Tatra landscapes appeared in the artist's oeuvre particularly often during the interwar period, when Rafal Malczewski lived precisely in Zakopane.
The painting "Under the Tatra Mountains" indicates the artist's proficiency in the technique of watercolor and his sensitivity to color and color nuances. Rafal Malczewski himself admitted that his works are painted from nature and are a kind of impressions from his numerous wanderings and travels. The painter even rendered terrain and chiaroscuro relations in a photographic way. In the work on display, the way the landscape and wooden mountain huts are depicted aptly captures the mood of the place and the blissful space of the Tatra landscape and nature. The monumentality of the scale and the power of the mountains are further emphasized by the small figures situated on the right side and enlivening the whole composition.
In addition, the painting is part of an extensive series of landscapes executed in watercolor, which are a record of Rafal Malczewski's close relationship with the Tatra Mountains.
