Maurice Levis [1860-1940].

Lévis was a painter of landscapes and genre scenes, active professionally for almost 60 years. He began his studies at the Paris Academy in the 1870s, in the studios of Jules Lefebre, an academic portraitist, and Henri Harpignies, a Barbizonian. He thus became familiar with both classical and innovative trends in painting. In the first years he was influenced by his masters, but over time, assimilating the experience of the Impressionists, he began to paint more lightly, more spontaneously. He regularly exhibited his works at Salons, but had to wait a long time for critical recognition. He received honors, but it wasn't until 1927 that he was honored with a gold medal. All the time he was selling his works in the commercial galleries of Paris and London. He gained considerable popularity among collectors from the United States.
