He came from the Koekkoek family, well-known in the Dutch art community. His father, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851) had his own studio, where Marinus Adrianus received his first lessons. Like his older brother, Barend Cornelis (1803-1862), Adrianus specialized in landscape painting, often enhanced with elements of staffage, including human figures and animals. The artist visited cities such as Amsterdam and Hilversum.
Works by Marinus Adrianus are in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum in Rotterdam, the Musée Royale in Brussels, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Mappin Art Gallery in Sheffield.
