In the garden [pumpkins and beets], 1891
oil, canvas; 135.5 x 235.5 cm;
Signed and dated l. d.: Klass-Kazanowska 1891.

There is little source information on Maria Klass-Kazanowska. The primary ones tell of the artist receiving training in a Warsaw drawing class led by Wojciech Gerson, which took the place of the Academy, which closed in 1865, and then studying at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, where she earned the title "niekłassnyj chudożnik." At the same time, only one other painter of Polish descent, Maria Nostitz-Wasilkowska (1858-1922), studied in St. Petersburg. Maria Klass-Kazanovskaya's diploma canvas Idyll was awarded a silver medal and was purchased for the university's collection. The artist, who settled in the Borderlands in Zhytomyr, regularly sent her works to exhibitions organized by the TPZSP in Warsaw and TPSP in Krakow. Together with her husband Wladyslaw Kazanowski, she ran an art school in Zhytomyr. After her death in 1899, an exhibition was held at the Warsaw Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, combined with the sale of works, the proceeds of which were used to provide scholarships for students of the art school further run by her husband. Maria Klass-Kazanowska painted genre scenes documenting rural work (the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw), architectural motifs, of which an image of Kamieniec Podolski is preserved (in the collection of the Henryk Sienkiewicz Museum in Oblęgorek) and still lifes with bouquets of flowers still in the 18th century convention. Most of her works, are small-scale paintings documenting village life, such as Harvest of Beets. It seems that the artist may have done her preliminary sketches outdoors, hence the small size of the compositions. In the reports of the TPZSP in Warsaw, at the end of the 19th century, one can find several items of her authorship also titled In the Garden, however, it is not possible to unequivocally assign the works listed in the directories to specific paintings if only because of the repetition of motifs.

It is worth noting, however, that the author of the "Memoirs" of the TPSP in Cracow, Emanuel Swieykowski mentions the name of Klass-Kazanowska as equally noteworthy as that of Wladyslaw Podkowiński, at the same time appreciating the qualities of the painter "Klassówna's sincere and upright character won her general sympathy among Poles and Russians, (...) This talented, brave and very intelligent painter, deprived of material means, fought poverty, cheerfully looking to the future. Exhausted by her work for a French pseudo-painter, receiving obstructions in the highest St. Petersburg circles, she died, having failed to bring her artistic dreams to their intended goal."

At the same time, another painter of Polish descent, a peer of Maria Klass-Kazanovskaya's - Henryk Siemiradzki - was also celebrating triumphs in St. Petersburg artistic circles and beyond.
A monumental work of high artistic quality, In the Garden of Maria Klass-Kazanowska, is an exceptional rarity on the auction market, dating from 1891 and probably returned to Poland after 1945. What is known, however, is that the artist's son Odo Oktawian Klass lived in the Vilnius region with his family until 1945.
