Biography
German landscape and marine painter. He initially studied at the Stuttgart Polytechnic and then at the Munich Academy under Karl von Piloty. In 1875 he visited Switzerland, and in 1878 went to Venice, where he became friends with Gustav Schönleber. In 1893 he became chairman of the "Munich Secession" grouping of artists and settled in Dachau, where he became associated with Adolf Hőlzer and Arthur Langhammer. Together they founded the group "Die Dauchauer," which achieved great success at Berlin's National Gallery in 1898. In 1899 Dill moved to Karlsruhe, where he was appointed professor of painting at the local academy. During his first period, he painted mainly depictions of coastlines, fishermen, ships and seafarers, with all the details he had observed during his time on the North Sea and in Venice. Together with his friend, the painter Schönleber, he searched for painting motifs on the fishing island of Chioggia. Many realistic paintings with rich colors were created there.
