Leopold GOTTLIEB (1879-1934). Youngest brother of Maurycy Gottlieb, prominent 19th century painter of Jewish origin. He studied art in 1896-1902 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under J. Malczewski and T. Axentowicz. He continued his studies in Munich in the studio of A. Ažbe. In 1904, he settled permanently in Paris. He was a member of the Vienna "Haagenbund" and initiated the formation of the Cracow "Group of Five" (1905). In 1917-1919, he participated in Formist exhibitions. In Paris he was associated with the Montparnasse milieu, especially close to M. Kisling and E. Zak.
