Kazimierz Pochwalski studied under J. Matejko at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow and under A. Wagner and O. Seitz at the Munich Academy, and later also in Vienna and Paris. He traveled to Italy, Greece, Egypt and Turkey. From 1893 he lived permanently in Vienna, where he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1894 to 1918. He painted genre scenes, but above all became famous as a portraitist, highly regarded for his technical mastery and ability to accurately characterize his models. He portrayed, among others, Emperor Franz Joseph, Henryk Sienkiewicz,with whom he was friends (MN Krakow), Włodzimierz Dzieduszycki (MN Wroclaw) and a number of figures from the circles of the court and aristocracy. After 1918, despite his continued popularity and success, he permanently returned to his native Cracow.
