Károly Markó came from a Hungarian family with artistic traditions; his father, Károly Markó the Elder, was also a painter. Károly studied in Italy, as did his brothers András and Ferenc. His work shows the strong influence of Italian artists, especially the so-called Posillipo school and Macchiaioli. Like painters affiliated with these groups, Markó painted mainly landscapes. His oeuvre also includes scenes of depictions of biblical subjects.
Markó was a professor at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. He trained many successful Italian painters. Toward the end of his life he moved to Moskow, where he died in 1891.
His works are among others in the collection of Magyar Nemzeti Galéria - Hungarian National Art Gallery.
