The offered composition refers to a series of illustrations to the novel "With Fire and Sword" by Henryk Sienkiewicz, created in 1885-1886, commissioned by the Lvov publisher Edward Trzemeski. The dynamic scene was depicted with attention to detail and an excellent sense of color tones. Juliusz Kossak was a highly regarded illustrator. His achievements in this field include compositions for the works of Wincenty Pol, Adam Mickiewicz and Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski. Not all of his works were published, such as his illustrations to "Pan Tadeusz." Moreover, the painter served as a manager in the "Illustrated Weekly", collaborated with the magazine "Kłosy", and his drawings or woodcuts were highly regarded. Apparently, illustration gave the artist great pleasure. The presented full-size painting composition is sure to be a valuable collector's item.
