The scene depicting an insurgent episode from 1831 is commented on in an extensive certificate of authenticity prepared by Tadeusz Kossak, son of Juliusz, brother of Wojciech. North of the city, in the Zuchowiecki Gorge, there was a clash between a Volhynian cavalry regiment and Novorossian dragoons. Wounded Lieutenant Colonel Rozycki knocked down Major Hening in a horse duel. Still Lieutenant Colonel of dragoons Hewes tried to lead the army in a counterattack, but fell pierced by a lance. The deaths of the commanders and the crossfire caused the rapid retreat of the Russians.
