Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in the studio of F. I. Bruni. In 1859 he won a small gold medal for his painting " Christ the Child Disputing with Theologians in the Temple". In 1863 the St. Petersburg Academy awarded him the title of artist of the 14th class, and in 1864 the title of academician for his painting" Marcello's Aria". He exhibited at the Paris Salon (he became famous for his painting "Hippolytus son of Theseus". In 1882 he was awarded the St. Anne medal. He executed large historical compositions of Russian and French history (including "Peter the Great in Paris in 1717"). He also took up genre subjects and painted landscapes and portraits.
