Biography

Józef Kidoń (1890, Rudzica - 1968 Warsaw) - began studying painting in 1910 at the Free Academy of Art in Lviv in the studio of Stanisław Batowski and Ludwik Kwiatkowski. He later continued his studies in Amsterdam. He spent the 1920s on artistic travels around Europe, visiting Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. He gained considerable recognition by portraying personalities of the Silesian elite in the period before the outbreak of World War II. The portraitist presented his works at solo exhibitions (including at the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Lviv in 1921, in Lodz - at the Municipal Art Gallery in 1926 and again in March 1930, in Katowice in 1927). In 1929 Kidoń became a member of the board of directors of the Union of Professional Artists in Silesia, which numbered about forty artists. And in 1956 he was one of the founders of the All-Polish "Zachęta" group.
