"Art is the expression of an impression. Even in view of this, the object is absolutely necessary to bring out the image. Between impression and expression is mediated in the artist by the subconscious and therefore the work is a spiritual issue, not a photographic imitation of the object. Any subject can be painted as long as the artist has explored it in a spiritual way."
