With the help of his aunt, he continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1932. The outbreak of World War II thwarted the future artist's professional plans. He did his military service and was exiled to Siberia. He returned to Germany in 1948. He earns his first money as a writer and advertising graphic designer.
