Jerzy NIEMENTOWSKI
1989 - 1918
Painter and poet. Studied Polish and art history at the Jagiellonian University and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (under W. Weiss). In 1916 he was assigned to the Inspectorate of War Graves in Przemyśl as part of the Austrian army. He exhibited at the First Exhibition of the C. K. Inspection of War Graves of the Military Command in Przemyśl (1917) and at the Annual Exhibition of the TPSP in Lviv (1918). He painted mainly landscapes of mountain and foothill areas from the Beskids, Tatra Mountains and Podhale, as well as the Przemyśl region. His painting was influenced by the Young Poland movement, especially the school of Jan Stanislawski, to which he was drawn by his subjective approach to nature. His favorite compositional motifs were a road or river winding between trees, birches among fields, clouds looming over the horizon. He avoided color contrasts, subordinating the whole to a single tone. He laid down paint with quick, energetic brushstrokes, sometimes passing into a longer wavy line.
