After the outbreak of war in 1914. Jerzy Kossak, despite serving in the Austrian army, did not end up at the front. Thanks to his father's connections, he remained in Krakow. It was only a few months before the end of the war that he was called to the Italian front, where he served in a car column in the 2nd regiment of Austrian lancers: "Poor Koko," wrote Wojciech Kossak, "he will experience some poverty, but maybe it will harden his soul and open his eyes to life. The Italian front today is not so terrible, by the way, I suppose he will stay with the Autokolonn (quoted by K. Olszanski, Jerzy Kossak, Ossolineum 1992, p. 19).
Although the events of the war in the Polish lands were not his, Jerzy, familiar with them from stories and illustrations, depicted them in his paintings. From the years 1916-1917 we note only four paintings," wrote Kazimierz Olszanski (dz. cit., p. 19). Only a few more works from that time have appeared on the art market, so they are a great rarity.

Jerzy Kossak (Krakow 1886 - Krakow 1955)- son of Wojciech, grandson of Juliusz Kossak- from early childhood painted under the direction of his father and grandfather. A continuator and imitator of their art, he created battle, historical and genre scenes with the omnipresent motif of the horse. He painted pictures of the November Uprising, the Napoleonic Wars and many scenes from the 1920 war. His best-known composition of this kind was Miracle on the Vistula. He also painted numerous Chases and Lancer Chases with Cossacks, Wolf Raids, Hunting and Weddings.
