oil, plywood, size 41 x 31 cm, signed "Jerzy Kossak" on the underside.
Soldier depicted on a chestnut horse, riding at a steely pace through an autumn forest, surrounded by birch trees and beech trees losing their leaves. The forest landscape and trees, treated sketchily, is only a sort of closing frame for the proper representation. The horse and its coat and all its equipment are rendered with greater accuracy, while the most careful treatment is given to the rider's weaponry and uniform, which allows for his flawless identification. This is an officer of the 14th Cuirassier Regiment of Horse Riding
Duchy of Warsaw. He is dressed in a navy blue uniform jacket with mottled
piping and collar, with gold epaulettes and cuirass on the chest, with a
a cargo belt over his right shoulder, wearing white pants and long
boots. The elements of the uniform are rendered in a painterly manner, but according to the order,
which is essential to the content of the representation here. A similar compositionally and
formally painting by Jerzy Kossak, which differs from the depicted one in small details,
is in the collection of the Military Museum in Bialystok (inventory number MWB, 2284)
