One of the favorite genre scenes painted by the author - a meeting between a lancer and a village girl. Shown on a summer's bright day, by the river separating the protagonists, the soldier, standing casually, smokes a cigarette and holds the reins of a saddled chestnut horse, which bows its head to drink in the river. On the other side, two girls in flared skirts stand in the water and do laundry in it - conversing with the soldier they encounter. Freely and painterly rendered landscape of riverside meadows with single birch trees in the background, feathery white clouds in the blue sky.
