Excellent work by Jerzy Kossak with fantastic provenance. The work was exhibited at the famous pre-war exhibition "Three Generations of Kossaks" in 1933. Subsequently purchased in 1987 by the State Enterprise DESA, preserved with the original purchase receipt!
Study of a White Horse painted around 1932 by Jerzy Kossak. The work is signed on the obverse in the lower left, "Szakdu" (?), probably the name of the horse, followed by "Jerzy Kossak 1932" and "Kępie" i.e. the name of a village located in Malopolska province, Miechow district, Kozlow municipality. It is likely that the presented Study of a Horse was painted from nature.
Unusual work of one of the famous Polish masters. Jerzy Kossak (1886 Krakow - 1955 Krakow) - one of the most famous Polish artists, continuator and follower of the painting heritage of the Kossak family. He honed his talent from an early age, under the guidance of his father Wojciech and grandfather Juliusz. From them he took the subject matter of his works, including battle and genre scenes, close to the heart of Polish viewers at the beginning of the last century. An omnipresent theme in Jerzy Kossak's work is the horse, in the painting of which he achieved mastery. Jerzy's sure yet expressive hand perfectly reflected the nature and dynamics of mounts, which he knew firsthand as an instructor at the School of Riding Officers in Tarnow. The passion and gift for depicting these animals are evident in the full spectrum of Kossak's works, whether they commemorate Napoleonic events or rural genre scenes to which the work up for auction belongs. dimensions: 49.5 cm x 37 cm, in frame 59 cm x 46.5 cm
