Biography
Jean Peské / pol. Jan Mirosłąw Peszke (1870 Golta/Ukraine-1949 Le Mans) - Polish painter and illustrator originally from Ukraine, active in France. At the age of 15 he began studying painting at the Drawing School of Nikolai Murashko in Kiev, and continued in 1886-1889 at the School of Fine Arts in Odessa and the Warsaw Drawing Class under Wojciech Gerson. He arrived in the French capital in 1891 and studied at the Académie Julian under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. He was introduced to the Parisian artistic community by Gabriela Zapolska and Marie Curie-Skłodowska collected his paintings.He frequented the south of France, and in 1934 in Collioure, Languedoc, he created a museum (now called Musée de Collioure Fonds Peské). Jan Miroslaw Peské's work includes landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes and, less frequently, portraits. He painted with oil paints, watercolor, gouache, drew with pencil, charcoal and sanguine, and used various graphic techniques. He presented his works at many exhibitions in France.
