Jean-Jacques Francisque GARAT [1853 - ca. 1914]
Place de la Concorde

mixed technique on paper

dimensions: 27 x 40 cm

Jean-Jacques Francisque Garat, painter and illustrator, had a lifelong association with Paris, a city that became a constant source of creative inspiration for him. His repertoire of favorite subjects included busy streets, scenes in the park, amusement parks, and the nightlife of Parisian cafes.

The artist used oil paints, but often resorted to the watercolor technique as well. He gave his paintings, especially those done on paper, a fleeting, ephemeral character. When painting them, he abandoned precision and topographical accuracy altogether in favor of an elusive sensibility. He signed his works with the pseudonym Francis Garat. In 1898 he was admitted to the Salon of French Artists in Paris.
